Lucy Letby, a 33-year-old former nurse, has been sentenced for the murders of seven babies and attempted murder of six more at Countess of Chester Hospital. Her trial, which concluded on Friday, marked her as the most prolific child killer in modern history.
Letby's killing spree began in June 2015, predominantly during night shifts. Two doctors began suspecting Letby's involvement after observing her presence during each collapse. Despite their concerns, Letby claimed victimization, leading to an apology from hospital executives and accusations against the doctors being dismissed.
The hospital delayed police involvement, prioritizing its reputation. Eventually, in May 2017, police were formally alerted following persistent urging by concerned staff. Letby's arrest followed in July 2018 in Chester.
Evidence at Letby's home revealed notes confessing her crimes, including statements such as "I am evil I did this." This led to a government-mandated inquiry to analyze the hospital's handling of the situation and regulatory actions.
The Crown Prosecution Service stated Letby manipulated medical records and misled colleagues to cover her tracks. Despite numerous efforts to conceal her actions, justice has now been served. Families of the victims remain devastated and are seeking closure.
