A young man named Sam Toms, aged 19, stole a Range Rover from a car park at Manchester Airport, leading police on a high-speed chase at up to 150 mph. This reckless event was captured by CCTV and later pursued by a police helicopter.
The stolen vehicle was identified with false number plates while driving through Staffordshire, reaching speeds over 100 mph. Despite police deploy methods like a stinger, the pursuit continued, with Toms performing hazardous driving maneuvers like overtaking and running red lights.
The chase ended after ten minutes near Birmingham, where Toms lost control of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. He has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including theft and dangerous driving.
According to prosecutor Zoe Dawson, Toms was seen on CCTV at a multi-storey car park at Manchester Airport on March 31. CCTV caught two men tampering with a Range Rover before driving it out, followed by a VW Golf.
The police pursuit involved a dramatic chase, with Toms ignoring road safety and almost crashing into other vehicles. The car was eventually stopped after extensive damage led to it being written off.
Upon capture, a device used to break into the car and the vehicle's original plates were discovered.
The incident highlights the severe consequences of dangerous driving and car theft. Judge Elizabeth Nicholls described the event as the most serious case of dangerous driving she had seen in a long time. She noted Toms' previous dangerous driving convictions and the pressures he faced from questionable associates.
