A 19-year-old student, Luke O'Connor, tragically lost his life after being stabbed on his way home from a Halloween event. His attacker, Shiloh Pottinger, was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment at Manchester Crown Court.
Pottinger, a 20-year-old music production student, reacted violently over a comment on his skateboard, leading to the incident on Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield, Manchester, in October of last year.
The sentencing hearing was emotionally charged with Luke's mother, Carolyn O'Connor, delivering a powerful victim impact statement. She expressed her profound grief and anger towards Pottinger, who she claimed showed no remorse during the trial.
During court proceedings, it was revealed that Pottinger had no prior convictions and was considered to have a lack of maturity at the time of the incident. Despite this, the judge deemed him a dangerous offender but opted not to impose a life sentence.
Luke's father, Jason O'Connor, also shared his sorrow through a statement, mentioning the posthumous diploma that will be awarded to Luke in recognition of his academic achievements at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Sentencing Pottinger, Judge Nicholas Dean KC acknowledged the devastating impact on Luke's family and highlighted the senseless nature of the crime.
